A Chart Moves as Fast as Its Videos Are Young

Between 26 July and 19 August 2026 we recorded 1,800 country-days: 72 national charts, measured every day, each time comparing the new top 50 with the previous one. That gives every country a turnover rate, meaning the share of its chart replaced overnight. The spread is enormous. Bulgaria replaces 14 per cent of its chart per day on average, Brazil 88 per cent. A factor of six between two lists that YouTube builds with the same algorithm. The obvious question is what produces that gap, and the answer turns out to be measurable. For each country we also computed the median age of the fifty videos on the chart today, counted in hours since publication. Placed against the average turnover of the past 25 days, the correlation is −0.93. In practice this means the speed of a chart is almost entirely explained by one thing: how old the videos in it are allowed to get. Nothing else we track comes close to that level of explanation.

Brazil: a median of 22 hours, and 88 per cent replaced daily

The Brazilian chart is the fastest of the 72 we track. Its median entry today was published 22 hours ago, and over 25 days its turnover never fell below 79 per cent — on 15 August it reached 100 per cent, meaning not a single video survived the night. This live recording, first in the country today, is 20 hours old and appears nowhere else in the world. In a chart like this one, being number one says nothing about durability: tomorrow the top will be occupied by videos that do not exist yet.

Japan: the youngest chart on the planet

Japan has the lowest median age of all: 14 hours. This concert film, number one today, was published 15 hours before the snapshot. Japan combines that extreme freshness with 79 per cent daily turnover, which places it among the ten fastest markets. The country is also the most self-contained we measure, with 94 per cent of its top 50 appearing in no other chart. Speed and isolation reinforce one another: a strictly local chart depends on strictly local publishing rhythm, and Japanese channels publish daily.

Bulgaria: 14 per cent per day, a median of 116 hours

The slowest chart in the world sits at the other end of the same line. Bulgaria replaces 14 per cent of its top 50 per day and its median entry is 116 hours old — nearly five days. This music video, number one today, was published 82 hours ago and is still the freshest thing near the top. The oldest entry in the same list, the Clayface trailer, has been available for 27 days. A Bulgarian chart read on Monday still largely describes the previous week.

Cambodia: an entry published eight days ago, and it is number one

Cambodia posts the highest median age of the 72 countries, 155 hours, for a turnover of 18 per cent. This video has been online for 202 hours — more than eight days — and still holds first place. The country pairs that slowness with 90 per cent exclusive entries. Both facts come from the same cause: a market where few videos are published each day keeps the ones it has, because nothing arrives to push them out.

France: 72 per cent turnover on a 15-hour median

France sits high on the fast side, with 72 per cent average turnover and a median age of 15 hours, close to Japan. This track, number one today, was published 16 hours before the snapshot and is already charting in eight countries. The French chart shows what the correlation predicts with no exception: the videos that reach it are almost always less than a day old, so the list has to be rebuilt every morning.

Reading these five cases in sequence makes the mechanism visible. Turnover is not a measure of public enthusiasm; it is a measure of publishing supply. Where many videos are released every day — Brazil, Japan, France — the chart cannot hold anything, because each new day brings fifty candidates fresher than yesterday's. Where the supply is thinner — Bulgaria, Cambodia, Ghana — the same entries survive for weeks, not because they are more loved but because nothing displaces them. The consequence matters for anyone comparing markets. A video that lasts four days in Brazil has done something remarkable; the same four days in Bulgaria is unremarkable. Ranking positions cannot be compared across borders without knowing the speed of the chart they belong to, and that speed is a stable property of each country, not a weekly accident. Across 25 days, the ordering of countries by turnover barely changed.
