Latin America's Biggest Overnight Jumps Are All Songs From Another Decade

Each day we record, for every country, the entry that gained the most places since the previous snapshot. Over 25 days and 72 countries that gives 1,521 recorded jumps. Sorted by size and filtered to Latin America, the top of the list produces a result we did not expect: nearly every one of the largest overnight climbs is a catalogue song rather than a new release, uploaded by a channel that does not belong to the artist. Selena, Diomedes Díaz, Chayanne, Natti Natasha, Plan B, Los Prisioneros — the biggest single-night movements recorded in Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia during these four weeks were driven by lyric videos of catalogue tracks, posted by third-party accounts. Not one of them is an official artist channel.
01Selena, 1994, gains 41 places in one night in Chile

On 2 August this visualizer of a track released in 1994 climbed 41 places in the Chilean chart, the largest single-night gain recorded in the country over the period. The same video gained 32 places in Venezuela on the same date. It is posted by a compilation channel, not by the estate or the label. Two national charts moved simultaneously for a thirty-two-year-old song because one re-upload found an audience.
02Diomedes Díaz, +41 places in Colombia

On 27 July, this lyric video of a vallenato standard gained 41 places in Colombia, matching the largest jump recorded there. The uploading channel is a small account with no institutional connection to the artist, who died in 2013. In a chart that turns over 72 per cent of its entries daily, a catalogue track climbing 41 places overnight is a far stranger event than a new release doing the same.

On 11 August the same country produced a near-identical event with another catalogue ballad, again through a third-party lyric channel. Two of Colombia's three largest jumps of the period involve catalogue tracks rather than current releases, in a market whose median chart entry is 31 hours old. The pattern repeats rather than happening once.
04Natti Natasha and Ozuna, +36 in Argentina and +32 in Peru the same day

On 30 July this lyric video moved 36 places in Argentina and 32 in Peru simultaneously. Cross-border synchronisation is the signature of the phenomenon: these videos do not spread country by country over a week, they move several Spanish-speaking charts in the same 24 hours, which is what a single social platform trend looks like when it reaches YouTube.

On 3 August a 2010s reggaeton track gained 33 places in Peru through a channel whose name gives no indication of any rights relationship. The economics are worth stating plainly: the views, and whatever revenue attaches to them, land on an account that did not make the record. The official version exists and did not move.

On 29 July a Chilean rock classic from 1990 gained 31 places in the Colombian chart via another lyric account. Six of the largest jumps we recorded across Latin America follow the same template: catalogue track, lyric or letra video, unofficial channel, several countries at once. The template is stable enough to be predictive.
Two conclusions follow, and both are only visible with a daily archive. The first is that Latin American charts have a catalogue layer that no snapshot shows, because these tracks do not stay: they surge for a day or two and vanish. Reading Chile or Colombia once a week, you would never see them. The second is that the layer is not controlled by rights holders. Every one of the six largest catalogue jumps we recorded came from a channel with no visible connection to the artist, several of them from accounts whose entire purpose is re-uploading lyrics over static images. The audience is real, the movement is real, and it is happening outside the official distribution of the works involved. For a region where turnover routinely exceeds 70 per cent per day, that is the only part of the chart with any memory at all.
